OCHRE BEAMS by jjméndez

OCHRE BEAMS
Stab the dry
landscape
and build
an artificial
border wall
that blocks
the winds
of wishful
earthly
dreams.

The thirsty
land bleeds
hunger and
the yellow
sagebrush
consumes
the scanty
evaporating
water droplets.

A relentless
blaring sun
fades the
south-facing
side of the
ever-watchful
muted wall;
the north-
facing side
is showing
weathered signs
of bleeding rust.

Scrubby men,
cautious women
and scared
hungry children
in ramshackle
clothes attempt
crossing the line.

Awaiting on
the other side,
official zealots
and self-
proclaimed
vigilantes
dressed in
military garb
and polarized
sun glasses
tap and rub
their holstered
rabid guns
with sweaty
self-righteous
index fingers
and nicotine-
tainted yellow
thumbs…

Postes de Ocre
Apuñalan el árido
paisaje
y construyen
un muro
artificial
que bloquea
el viento
de ensueños
terrenales.

La sedienta
tierra desangra
hambre y
los resecos
arbustos
consumen
las escasas
gotas de
agua que
se evaporan.

El implacable
y brillante sol
se desliza
hacia la cara
sur del siempre
vigilante y
silenciado muro.

La cara norte
del callado muro
se desgasta
y da señas
de óxido sangrante

Hombres
sin afeitar
mujeres
cautelosas con
niños llenos
de temor
hambrientos
y andrajosos
tratan de cruzar
la línea…

Hacia el lado
donde esperan
patrulleros
ciegos
acompañados de
autoproclamados
vigilantes
en vestimenta
militar y gafas
polarizadas
que con
el dedo
índice
sudoroso
y el pulgar
mojigato
y pálido
manchado
de nicotina
golpean sus
rábidas armas
enfundadas…

KEEPING IT REAL by jjméndez

 Keeping it Real

Zeus declares his godly stance
under a moon-lit silvery sky.

Perseus beheads Medusa
and turns evil into stone.

Thor pounds sharp-edged thunderbolts
from his corner far to the north.

Quetzalcoatl spreads his wings
and heads east promising to return.

Jesus yields bread from stones
and absolves the sinful of their faults.

Mohammad unifies  the sand dwellers
and restores faith in the elders.

Buddha smiles and sits quietly
under his favorite tree…

A SUMMER NIGHT CALLED DESIRE by jjméndez

A Summer Night Called Desire

Sultry dark scents lure the rodents out
As sweat-beaded faces shake their bony
arms and scan the city with matching
eyeballs floating in the summer night.

Tired ears listen to the gnawing
at the scraps the innocent hide for
another day in an abandoned car.

Robocops and undercover door-
shakers wearing sacred badges prey
on clueless souls who take it all in stride.

The grave yard shift tic-tocs away
the clammy night and insomniacs pretend
to dream under a buzzing neon light.

The Lord of Mictlán and his lovely
wife take aim at the street corner's rowdy
crowd with their double-barreled spray cans
of Made in China black rodenticide.

An army of persecuted roaches waves a white flag...
